3. I believe students should learn natural, recent and standard English, but the challenge is choosing the appropriate words, so the words used to describe someone’s character that I would choose to teach to an intermediate group of learners, would probably be: easy-going, stubborn, reliable and assertive. I have chosen these words because they could be learned in opposite pairs, they are frequently used and useful as well.
4. Indeed there are some false friends for speakers of Romanian language such as: 1. eventually (within an indefinite time or at an unspecified future time) and in Romanian the word means : accidental, casual; 2. actually (used to imply that one would expect the fact to be the opposite of that stated surprisingly) and in Romanian means: actual, contemporary; 3. effective (able to accomplish a purpose) and in Romanian means: actually, really.
5. I have to disagree with both statements because on one hand, I don’t think students can or should decide for themselves what words they would like to learn as they have different personalities, different needs and different ways of understanding vocabulary. On the other hand, I believe it is a part of the teacher’s job to select and grade some vocabulary items they need to learn and to present and explain these items in a student-friendly language, providing multiple examples and multiple contexts. Teaching vocabulary is a mixture between the two perspectives in the sense that students might suggest from time to time some interesting words to learn, while the teacher could require a contextual approach of these words.
