I think to make any controlled practice more motivating you can add an element of competition. For example, 'noughts and crosses' on the board, where each team has to construct a sentence/answer a question from the class's textbook to win a 'square' is fun.
Also, if you can make it a bit 'hands-on' I find this interests students too. For example, if you have an exercise in the book where they students have to order the words to make questions or sentences, you could copy the words onto little pieces of paper and the students physically order the papers to form the sentence. This makes a potentially 'boring' activity more motivating, especially if it's a race between pairs of students.
