Usually before I explain a new subject I bring a photo and ask students some questions they need to guess what will the new subject be about. For example when the subject is about learning new vocabularies, I bring a picture that has some shapes in it. Then I divide students into groups. I give each one of them a picture, then I call out the word and they need to find the shape that goes with the word
