You are going to prepare a lesson based on a live listening about the following:
Topic: Last weekend
Language: Past simple (regular and irregular)
Level: Elementary
Assumptions: Students have already encountered the past simple, but need further practice.
First prepare what you are going to say about your weekend. You can write it out in full, but then prepare prompts or notes from which you can tell your story. For example: Sat. evening: cinema with Toni.
I had a wonderful time last weekend. On Friday night, I went to the theatre with some friends and after that we had dinner at a restaurant. On Saturday morning, I visited my mum, I did some shopping and in the afternoon, I watched TV and had a nap on the couch. On Sunday I met my friends and we went to the beach for a walk. We had lunch at an Italian restaurant. We shared a tomato and mozzarella salad and ate some wonderful pasta. I went to bed early on Sunday night.
Friday night: theatre with friends. Dinner at a restaurant
Saturday morning: visit mum
Saturday afternoon: watch TV and siesta
Sunday: walk on the beach, lunch at an Italian restaurant
Now prepare a lesson plan based on the live listening about your weekend. What activities could precede the listening? What activities could follow it? Don't forget to design a listening task and a speaking component.
1 Write some sentences on the board using the past simple tense. Use time expressions (last weekend, yesterday). Use regular forms first (walk, visit, play). Do the same with irregular verbs (give a list of irregular verbs first). Leave sentences on board and practice some more with them. Cue ‘What did you do last weekend?’
2 Prepare a worksheet with easy regular/irregular verbs in the past. Complete short, easy sentences first. Verbs like have, go, eat, walk, visit and then have, eat, drink, swim
3 Explain what I did at the weekend.
4 Reading comprehension. Copy the text but omit some of the words, the verbs in this case
