Unit 5

Post by mpratf » Sat Oct 01, 2016 2:46 pm

Dear Colleagues,

I have chosen the following questions about exploiting learners’ errors.

2. Which of the ideas (in exercise 5) have you tried yourself?

Well, I have tried the following strategies:
- I try not to interrupt fluency activities.
- I make students keep a record of their mistakes.

Nevertheless, I don’t often use students’ homework mistakes as lesson warmers, but once in a while I like collecting their mistakes from their compositions and correcting them with the class. Their Student’s Book has a list of the most common mistakes for their level. Students are asked to refer to it.

3. Do you believe it is important not to interrupt students when they are speaking in order to draw attention to their errors?

Yes, I do. I try not to interrupt students when they are speaking because I believe that they have to feel confident in English. However, what I normally do is I rephrase what the student is saying as a way of correction. For example: A student says: Last weekend I goed to Salou and played with my friends. I would say: Oh, you went to Salou, how interesting! and where did you play with your friends?…
However, if students are making a presentation in front of the class, I never interrupt and, when the presentation is over, I tell the student: revise your irregular verbs, mind the difference between the present tenses, remember that adjectives have no plural form, check the pronunciation of this and that word, etc.

Greetings,
Marta
