Unit 8

Dear colleagues,

Below you can find my answers:

1. A product approach? A process approach? Which approach do you prefer? Why?

Most of the times I adopt a product approach with model texts that students have to follow. I have seldom tried a process approach. I believe that I follow this product approach because of the way that writing skills are presented in the coursebook and because I am inexperienced in the process approach.

2. In what contexts might one be more preferable than the other? For example, think of teaching children, teaching businesspeople, teaching English for academic purposes, exam preparation etc.

Because process approach involves planning, drafting and redrafting, I believe that writing is harder and I would recommend it for elder teenagers and adults in all contexts. For children or beginners, I would recommend a product approach, with models and filling-in blanks, until they feel confident to start writing more freely.

3. What other activities for teaching writing have worked for you?

We normally use brainstorming before we work on our compositions or go over vocabulary that will be needed. Sometimes I provide the words and sometimes this is students’ task. We can also review grammar structures that will be needed for the writing that appear in the model texts; for example, past simple forms or greetings in formal letters.

All the best,
Marta
