After reading the case of Roger Ridgway I have understood that he has a big problem because he has created a parallel unreal world.
I would advise Roger to accept it, this is the first thing to do, otherwise he won't be able to get over his obsession. There's nothing wrong in being shy and the Net can be a good tool to meet people. But after a period, he should make the effort and try to meet these cyber friends in the real world. If he is not able to do so, then I would suggest Roger visit a psychologist, with some therapy and patience, I am sure he will be able to become self-assertive in his relations.
I don't think that Net addiction is exaggerated; I know people who are in the habit of spending hours in front of the computer in their free time, searching for everything (information, friends, lovers, serials, films…).
Also the mobile has become addictive: there are people who is checking the phone every minute, they even get angry if you don’t answer their messages instantly.
I usually work with a computer in my job, I need to accept that is useful and comfortable. I have created data bases which have made life easier. Also via mail, the communications are very fluent: when I ask for a price to a salesperson, he/she answers me very quickly so I reduce the time of buying something needed. Nevertheless, I could live without it. There was life before Internet appears …In my job is practical, but I could sort everything out without it. In my personal life, I don’t use it very much: my laptop is almost new even that it has five years already.
