Unit 1. About me

Post by Cristina Marí » Thu Apr 02, 2020 6:44 pm

According to Catalan statistics institute, in 2018 the most common names for boys were Marc and Pol and for girls Julia and Martina. My daughter’s name is Martina, so I’m not very original.

My family name, Marí, is not common in Barcelona where I live, but it is a very common family name in Ibiza, where my grandfather was born. This should be the reason why people often ask me if I come from Ibiza when I introduce myself.

My family name doesn’t refer to trades or professions, nor does it mean anything as far as I know, but there are many other family names that do refer to professions, such as Ferrer, Forner, Sabater, Cavaller …

When you meet someone for the first time in an informal situation, such as a party or in a bar, you usually use your first name. In formal situations, such as a work meeting, we usually use our full name.

In very formal situations we use surnames with the title Mrs or Mr, but at least in my experience is more usual to use full name to introduce other people. I use the title Mrs or Mr only when writing formal communications.

In Catalan there are also some common pet names to show affection, such as amor meu, reina, solet, bombonet
