In my country there are several common family names. I have one of those. My family name is Pereira. It doesn’t tell me where I come from, but when I was young I researched the name and found out that is a Spanish name. It appeared in the XVII century.
However, when my country was formed, my great grandparent was brought here by a family who has that name and he inherited when he was released from his slave condition.
My husband name is De Leon. It doesn’t relate him with a profession, but it is the place where the family came from.
When meeting people for the first time, we usually go by the first name. In formal occasions we use First name and family name. Nowadays, Sir or Madam is rarely used to refer.
In general, we use pet names in family bases. Amor, osito, princesa and others are used only if you have close relation to the person.
While I was growing up, between teenagers, was usual to use a nick name. It refers to different topics, a personality characteristic: oreja; initials: J.T.; short name: Pepe; and others.
