In my case, I´ve never employed a private investigator and I´ve never seen anyone working. I have only seen their in films or gossip shows.
I think that is a very strange and atypical work. I wouldn't like to work as a private investigator and I wouldn't like to use one of their. Because normally they work in a bad and difficult situations like infidelities or people who like to steal money to -censured- agency...
I've never considered employ a private investigator; maybe because up to now, I have been a lucky person or because I think that you need to fix a bad situations talking and not following in secret people who normally love.
I´m a teacher and sometimes this is a very strange work because of the reactions of your pupils and things and reaction you can see when you are learning something like people dancing, when they are sitting without doing anything falling down and things like that.
