Hello there,

Most days, as a working mother I have come through the decision between being a "bad" mother (staying late at the office) or being a "bad" professional (closing my laptop at close of business time). Both of them require infinite hours to do all I would like to. I wonder if fathers have the same feeling of not reaching the minimum at home and with their kids. It seems to me society put less presure on them about it. I reckon as a disadvantage the fact I want to educate and be the role model of my offspring in a daily bases. Thus far, I have had to draw on a third person to pick them at the school and take them to the park until I get home, late. And still with some work to be done... Playing hard in both worlds has turn out impossible for me.

1. Entrepreneurs are important people in society because they make new jobs and generate economic development, many entrepreneurs succeed because they are dedicated. In my country, Colombia, I know some stories about the poor that can start businesses,. For example, "SERVIENTREGA" a courier company, its founder was a messenger and could become a manager. I admire entrepreneurs, however, I think I'm not good for business

2. In some countries, people have not had the opportunity to study and progress, for example, blacks, the LGBTI community and women. In other countries, society tries to equalize opportunities, in my country, Colombia it is frequent that the best jobs are occupied by friends of politicians and not by those who really have the skills.

I’ve read the post and all the comments, and I totally agree with all of them. However, I would add other social groups like ethnical minorities such as gipsies or migrant population ( especially if they come from African or South American countries). Aboriginal people in some places have also big difficulties to be accepted as equals, and finally, people with disabilities. To finish, I will say one more thing. Unfortunately, in our country is not unusual that the best jobs be occupied by people not by their qualifications or abilities, but by what political party they belong to. This is another way to discriminate people.

Thanks for writing Josema. I think you are right, there is no doubt that the glass ceiling exists. Although maybe it's not as bad as it was a few generations ago.

growing a family= The expression is "raising a family". Raising a family and having a career at the same time is quite diffilcult.

I completely agree on women being nowadays disadvantaged when it comes to having a career. Although this is quite a difficult and sensitive topic (more in certain regions and cultures), women have undoubtedly more difficulties in their careers if they consider growing a family at the same time.

Thanks for your message Julia. I think you are right about women and children and education. Even in Europe, not so long ago, women were denied education. In the 1920s my great aunt threatened to commit suicide, because her father wouldn't allow her to continue school. Incredible. Luckily she won that battle and she became a nurse!

I think one of the groups that are in disadvantage in education and work is clearly women: in most of the countries they're not allowed to go to school, neither to work. Even when the breadwinner died, who was obviously a man, a member of the family, who was a woman, had to pretend to be man. This means they had to dress like men and, in some cases, had to have surgeries to look like them.

Another group that doesn't have easy access to education and a decent job is children used for *censured* trafficking or slavery: they actually work, but they don't have a suitable job. They're forced to work for serving a person that paid them for a sexual service. They're also paid for working in the fields or industries for an amount of hours that are inhuman and cruel and they get a ridiculous salary that doesn't make the ends meet. Plus, they can't go to school as they can't combine both work and education.

I totally agree with you. Disadvantaged people have the common traits you mentioned before, no matter why they lack of the ability of caring for themselves they are all disadvsntaged.

I think that a group of people in disadvantaged are people who lose the ability to work and live independently, and then have to live on the social welfare and government help. Losing or having no ability of working and lacking the necessary living income are the common characters of them.
