Grading vocabulary was an interesting exercise. I think the words are graded correctly and if I had to think about what other 5 words I would include in each one of the lists, I guess I would choose the following ones: living room, bathroom, table, chair and lamp for beginners, downstairs, cupboard, terrace, garage and kitchenette for intermediate students and attic, closet, courtyard, den and entryway for the advanced ones.
As for the first words I learned when I visited a country where I didn't speak the language (Germany), I tried to learn the basic words for hello, goodbye, yes, no and water but of course I realized pretty soon that I would never be able to make myself understood by just saying yes and no until I could produce some basic sentences/questions. Interestingly enough, I still remember all those basic words...
