I believe that the way students should sit depends on the kind of activity you have planned. The interaction paterns must be planned beforehand and sometimes there is the need to change them during the lesson. I find it useful to make the students sit in a horse shoe way which allows them to pay attention to the teacher and also they can see the students face to face, interacting with each other, not only can they throw coments acroos the classroom but they can also work in pairs with the person next to them. You can make children change seats or move around the classroom because changing the way they sit is not only an option but a necesity.
