Discussion Topics (unit 10)

Hello all,

Regarding continuous assessment, I would like to share this with you:

I think the assessment that takes place in my lessons is mainly the continuous one, rather than any other, as I take account of their performances during the whole school year. Some ways in which I implement continuous assessment:

- Self assessment by students
- Short tests
- Assembling a Portfolio of work

I must confess, though, that this task gets kinda hard sometimes, as I don't have time to write down notes about my pupil's progress at the end of every single lesson. It's sometimes difficult to plan and organise continuous assessment, because of the variety of forms that such assessment can take.

Have a nice week.

Hi Veronica, nice to see you again! Thanks for writing to the Forum. I agree, continuous assessment can be very laborious: I too spend hours recording grades, comments, progress made or not made in various aspects of language learning etc. And if you have a big class this process can really become extremely time consuming. But what's the alternative? A final exam at the end of the course is much simpler, but is it as fair?
I'm curious to know about the self assessment - how does that work? How reliable is it? Do you agree with your students' self assessment?
Take care,
Pieter
