Continuous assessment provides students with a constant number of opportunities to improve and sends the message that everyone can succeed if given enough time and practice. This reduces the anxiety around testing and heightens the emphasis on the learning itself. In my experience, continuous assessment has been highly motivating because students come to understand their proficiencies as well as their knowledge gaps, they are more self-aware and learn to approach problems differently.

Well-designed assessment can encourage active learning especially when the assessment delivery is innovative and engaging. Peer and self-assessment, for instance, can foster a number of skills, such as reflection, critical thinking and self-awareness – as well as giving students insight into the assessment process.
