8. Discussion topics.
1. Read the three teachers' quotes again. Whose planning style is most like your own – Deniz's, Paolo's, Erika's or none of these?
Deniz’s
Why? Because I tend to follow in certain way the “logical order” of the coursebook I teach. I start with a lead in activity and when necessary I would start with the grammar presentation or with the vocabulary pre-teaching. If needed I would also use some extra material or different tasks apart from the ones in the book.
2. Which qualities do you think are most important in planning a unit of work? Give your reasons. Choose from this list, and add others if necessary:
1. relevance
2. cohesion
3. variety
4. balance
5. logic
6. flow
I put that order because I think that the topic, subject and theme must be relevant to the learner and at the same time interesting. Then comes the cohesion with a variety of activities that should have a balance combining all skills in a logical order (depending on the topic) that translates in a lesson with its own flow.

3. When you plan a lesson, do you...
c. use the coursebook a lot?

4. What advice would you give a new teacher who says, "I spend hours and hours planning a scheme of work: I seem to go round and round, not getting anywhere"?
Don’t worry. There are other easier ways of planning without detailing too much. For example, try to imagine your class speaking and chatting about a topic they like. What skills will you teach and what language systems. And then continue with the activities for the lesson.
