I like practising a very simple game which I have used as an ice-breaker in the first sessions with intermediate level students. It goes like this: each student must write three sentences about him / herself, but one of them must be a very big lie. For instance, I could say: I am 28 years old, I can’t swim and I have been on TV. Students must guess which sentence is a lie. The student who is right reads his / her own sentences, and so on. It is a very simple way to get students to speak on a first class and for teachers to assess initially the speaking level of the group, in general.
