THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA

80 percent of the koala’s natural habitat has been destroyed and of the remaining 20 percent almost none is protected. Most of the koala’s remaining habitat is on privately owned land; therefore koalas have to compete with humans on a daily basis to ensure their survival.
Koalas in the wild face a number of threats such as destruction of habitat, cars, dogs, disease and sadly human apathy. It is estimated that less than 100 000 koalas exist in the wild. The survival of the species depends on the retention and effective management of suitable habitat and a greater public respect these endearing creatures
