In fact, languages are in the hands of people, not politicians. Language is the only absolutely true democracy. It's not what professors of linguistics ,academics or journalists say, but is what people do.The former Spanish dictator Franco spent decades trying to stamp out the nation's regional languages but today Catalan is stronger than ever and Basque is also popular.Nevertheless, it seems that globalisation will mean that many smaller-languages disappear. In the end, whether or not a language will "survive"is very simple: If a language is one that people don't participate in, it's not a language anymore.

I agree, Herminia. There's a radio program on Catalunya InformaciĆ³, sorry but I can't remember the name, that makes the same point. At each program, the radio host introduces the audience to a different language, widely spoken or not. The radio host talks about grammar, vocabulary and, curious words or their meanings. Anyway, the aim of the program is something like, every time people stop speaking a language the world looses a different way of understanding reality and expressing it. And because of that, the world become more homogeneous and globalized, as we tend to understand life the same way, using the same words.
It's something to ponder about.
