Elder Care Facilities with Learning Centers Twin Cities MNDo you consider yourself to be a lifelong learner? You look forward to attending classes, lectures, recitals etc.

If you are looking for a senior living option that provides lifelong learning activities, how do you determine if a community offers that. Here are 5 tips to determine if it’s the right option for you:

Ask for several months’ samples of their activity calendar. Do you see items that you would find interesting to you? Are there professors that teach a class? Presentations on countries/cultures?
Talk to residents that live there and find out what they say about activities.
Come and attend an activity and see who and how many residents of the senior community attend or better yet ask if you may stay in their guest suite overnight and go to activities.
Ask what their budget is for activities.
Determine who is in charge of planning the activities and interview that person to find out how they determine what put on the calendar each month.
As we age, we never need to stop learning. If that is a priority for you, make sure you choose a community that will meet your needs. If you need help in determining how to start your search, Choice Connections would be happy to give you our recommendations.

What's Your Happiness Level Senior Citizen Care Twin Cities MNAmong the wonderful books that Laurie gave me for Christmas was a delightful one by Madeline Drexler called “A Splendid Isolation, Lessons on Happiness from the Kingdom of Bhutan.” It is very short but talks about Bhutan and their constitutional requirement that “The State shall strive to promote those circumstances that will enable the successful pursuit of Gross National Happiness (GNH).” They do a survey every five years to determine how they are doing. In the 2015 survey 91.2% of people in Bhutan were in one of the top 3 levels listed below. Their average happiness was at 75.6%, which is in the Extremely Happy Range.

While we could not find a place to take their actual survey on GNH, we found this survey where you can take a similar survey and see how your happiness comes out.

Then you can see where that puts you on the Bhutan scale. If you score 77-100 percent, that’s Deeply Happy; 66-76 is Extremely Happy; 50-65 is narrowly happy; and 0-49 is unhappy. So in 2016 you can look at the areas you are most happy and celebrate. You can also look at places you are less happy and see what you can do to improve it. Have fun with the survey and be happy!
