1. What are common names where you come from?
In Canary Islands, forty years ago, the common names were the Biblical names, for example Juan, Miguel, Francisco, Santiago, etc., after that, in the 1990´s, appear names of the other countrys and stars of films, for example, Tom, Michael, Cristal, etc., nowadays there is a great variety of names.
2. Is your family name common?
Yes. My name is Miguel and my surname Santana, are very common both.
3. Does your family name tell you anything about your family (e.g., where you come from)?
The name tells nothing, however the surname indicates the area of provenance.
4. Some English names refer to trades or professions, such as Butcher or Baker. Does your name mean anything? Are there any names in your country that do?
My name mean nothing, and I don´t known person´s name that mean trades or professions.
5. Are any names from other countries popular in your country? Which ones?
Nowadays there are names from other countries, but none is popular.
6. In your country when you meet someone for the first time what name do you use? How do you know when you can use their first name?
In my country I always use the name and when you know that person during more time and feel that is a close friend, then you can use a nickname or first name.
7. In your country do you ever use surnames without a title (e.g., Mrs or Mr)? When could you do this? Why would you do it?
In my country is not usual use surnames. Perhaps when you are speaking with old person that you don´t meet. It´s a sign of respect.
8. There are common pet names in English that show affection, such as honey, darling or pet. What words are used in your language?
We usually use the names of movies characters, for example, my dog is named Harry, because of the Harry Potter movie.
