1 – Foreign language at school
Ladies and gentlemen,
This is an official announcement from the Education Ministry
The Government of Catalonia asked Education Ministry to choose an extra foreign language to teach children at schools.
After a few months debating what foreign language is the best choice in the current scene, the Ministry delegates have reached a conclusion that best foreign language to teach children at schools is Arabic.
Spanish is an official language in Catalonia so it cannot be considered a foreign language. Japan is a far country whereas Latin is very old to be useful at present time. Esperanto is an increasing language which we don’t still know what importance it can take in the near future.
The current scene shows Arabian like the most important immigrant profile at present. Knowing their language can be useful to better understand people coming in our country. It can be interesting if Catalan children mix with the new arrivals and they can do the same knowing each other.
So, we will be able to know better their culture and they can feel more integrated into the Catalan society. It probably will be hard at the beginning; however we believe this understanding will be very good in the future so reality is that we have to mix with them all time.
In the future our teachers, doctors, politicians, etc, will be able to understand Arabian people when they arrive. This has to cause better relationships and less incomprehension and distrust between our different cultures.
Disappearing languages
About Toggle I think the Government policies ought to protect the minority language in Lep so Toggle is possibly older than Lepese and the language is always a cultural treasure we must to preserve.
If we imagine that Toggle is spoken in a certain area in the country I suggest that both languages must be teaching at school like official languages. I think Government ought to have a Toggle channel on national Lep TV so the Toggle speakers can be able to watch TV shows in their first language even if they are out of Toggle region.
In your country
In Spain are spoken four languages: Spanish, Catalan, Galician and Basque.
Basque is the minority language in Spain, I think. There are few people speaking Basque to each other. Galician is more spoken than Basque but less than Catalan which is probably the language after Spanish more spoken in Spain.
Spain is divided in regional autonomies and the four regions which have own language can decide what policy they want to take about. The Spain Government don’t take any decision about those policies and, actually, doesn’t any especial thing to protect the other languages.
The second point in this post express my opinion which refers to a global knowledge about all languages spoken in the country for all people in it. I live in Catalonia and I don’t know about speaking Basque but I know where Basque is spoken and I think about it like a normal thing. I would like to can watch TV shows in different languages living in Catalonia. When we use the Internet to read something we often can choose the language which we want to use. What language we use finally is under our decision but the possibility is there. I can try it an this is good!
