The film describes the Frank’s family life in Ireland: how they survive with only bread and tea because the father spends all money in alcohol. Once the father finds a job in England and abandons the family, Frank’s mother and brothers live from charity. Finally, they have to go living with a distant relative and Frank starts work for the Post Office and later delivering newspapers and magazines. The film ends when at the age of nineteen, Frank returns to New York.
