I’m from Catalonia, Spain. In my country Gil, Garcia, Perez, Gonzalez…are very common names. My family name is Castaño. It isn’t a very common name, but neither is uncommon. “Castaño” means “chestnut”, but in Spain there are names refer to professions like Zapatero, Fuster, Sabater.
When we meet someone for the first time we use his first name except if is older than mine or if is a professional meeting. In these cases we use Sr. or Sra. Followed to the surname. Sometimes we use only the surname in enterprises or in the school.
