My family name is very common in Spain. There a lot of Martínez, Fernández, Hernández, etc...The only information I have about my surname is that is Spanish and means "son of". For example, Martínez means son of Martín, so as you see it doesn't refer to any profession this kind of surnames, however does names as Ferrer or Pintor. Until you don't have a certain trust with the person you don't use the first name and it depends also of the situation you Know them. It's not the same to meet somebody for business or in a close environment. Sometimes when there is enough trustness with the persons you also can use their surname without a title like Mrs or Mr.
At last, in Catalan there are pet names that show affection, such as "carinyo", that means the same as honey or darling.
