I’m from Catalonia so the statistics says that the most common names here are Julia for women and Marc for men. Although this, I don’t Know a lot of people called like both.
My family name isn’t common in Catalonia but in reality isn’t common anywhere. I’m from a small village from the south of Tarragona and there are some people of my family with the same family name but we unknown its mean or origin. In Spain and Catalonia, there are a lot of traditional common family names like Garcia, Fernández, Pérez,… but they don’t mean anything special.
In my opinion every day there are more people with, for example, English names, like John, Paul, Mary,… I think it could be due to the immigration and the new couples between Spanish and English people.
When I meet new people in my job I usually use my first and family name. With friends, I always introduce myself like Raquel, my first name.
Any common pet names in catalan are “cariño”, “xata/o”, “guapo/a”,… that we can use in very different situations and people. But when we are with our family and special with our couple or children, we can use our own invented words.
