In my opinion, I find this story quite implausible. In fact I don’t think this could really happen to anybody. I have ever find myself in this situation. On the other hand, under my point of view I think that these two places (Torquay / Turkey) are quite different. If I was in this situation feeling disorienteded, I guess I would observe the scenerery, for instance what kind of buildings are there, the types of cars, the people, their clothes for instance and of course the language.
I could find this a true situation, if we were talking about two cities of the same country or two cities of different countries from Europe. For instance if I took the wrong plane and instead of going to Paris I arrived to Madrid, maybe I could feel confuse but of course once again we have a lot of information around us.
Misunderstandings
I have never found myself in a situation like this. When I have travelled abroad, I have never had any problem to make myself understand. Of course there are countries where people are kinder and more pacient than in others. I really think that in Spain, in general, you find lovely people that always try to help foreigners.
