My name is Laia, and it’s a Catalan name, very common especially between the newborns. Some people say that this is the short for Eulàlia, with Greek origin, and it is said that she was a Saint who died with 13 years old, because she was martyred for being a christian. Santa Eulàlia is the co-patron of the city of Barcelona. The 12th of February is the onomastic day. The Cathedral of Barcelona is dedicated to this saint, and in the crypt there is her tomb.

But there is also another theory about this name; Laia is not the short of Eulalia, or the translation into Catalan of Eulalia in Spanish, because Laia has its own origin. It’s a name that comes of the Iberian village, pre-roman, called Laie, established in some regions of Catalonia, such as Maresme, Barcelonès, Baix Llobregat and Vallès. According to its beliefs, Laia was the goddess of the Laietans, the ancient habitants of this village. So it is a pagan name and it doesn’t have an onomastic day.

There are many girls called Laia in Catalonia, but I couldn't find another one with my same surnames.
