Common names where I come from... Normally Jordi is the most common, but also Joan, Josep, though last years Marc or Àlex I think are also popular names. Family names speaking, all the castillians that finish with "-ez".
My family name is not specially common: Aguilar.
My family name doesn't tell me anything about the origin of the family, but of course is a castillian name. It's a XXIV century's family name, but also means smonething realted to the "águila" (eagle).
In my country, also the names can refer to professions: Panadero and Carnicero are like Baker or Butcher in Spanish. Even Carnicer exist.
Yes, there are other nams from other countries that have become popular, most from Southamerica.
Normally you call somebody using Mr and Mrs or Ms, but some bosses use to call their workers using the family name and forgetting the form Mr and so on.
Pet names ar usually personal or private ones, but yes, there are also in catalan or in a non specific language: "cuchi"...
