My family name, Mendes, is a very popular name in Portugal. I don't know what's the origin of my family name, but I Think that Mendes stands for son of Mendo.
In Portugal we have several names that refers to professions (Eg: Sapateiro (Shoe maker), and several names that refrs to fruit trees (Eg: Pereira (Pear Tree).
Generally we only use the first name in a intimate relationship. But is consider rude to call a lady by her family name.
In Portugal, we abuse of the use of the titles. For instances, sometimes we use the title in a casual relationship.
Our favorite petnames are: Amor (Love), Querida (honey), but like in other countries, we have petnames speccific to each couple.
