I come from Catalonia and here the common names are catalan names like Puig or Ribes, but there are a lot of spanish names, also.
My family name is not a common one, where I live, my family is the only one, and I think that it doesn't tell anything about my family.
In my country as another ones, there are names that refer to trades and professions, e.g. Fuster (carpenter in english). And others that refer to trees or plants, e.g. Valls, Falgueres, Faixedes.
Actually I think there are names from other countries popular all over the world, now people moves a lot.
In Catalonia when you meet someone for the first time we use our name if we meet in a casual way or our family name if we do in a formal way. We know we can use the first name if they say us to do it or if we are in a casual way. We use surnames with a title when we meet someone elder than us or at work.
Here, the common pet names that show affection are: carinyo, rei/reina or nen/nena.
