Unit 2. Net Search. Women at work
Until the last 50 years, women were at home, doing housework and educating children. Most women who had jobs, worked as a nurse, midwife, shopkeeper or teacher. There were, of course, cases of some extraordinary women, who dedicated their life to research, medicine, politics, like Marie Curie or Mother Teresa of Calcutta, but they were the least.
Nowadays, women tend to work on some kind of subjects like, literature or politics, while technology is not so preferred. Women like Benazir Bhuto, Angela Merkel, Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi, are very well-known names.
In developed counties, woman is winning the battle of equality but there’s still much work to do. We can find women in jobs traditionally done by men like, doctor, taxi or bus driver, engineer, technician, politician, professor, researcher,… Nevertheless there are still many jobs done by men, for example truck driver, mason and also jobs related with construction, mine-worker or many others.
The main difference is still in jobs related with high management, there is where we find very few women leading companies. Since companies usually prefer a man for a top executive job, women have to work strongly to get those positions. Moreover, they earn much less money than their male counterparts.
There’s still a lot of work to do, but things are changing very quickly.
