Perhaps it is true but perhaps this depends of the concept of to waste time that we have. Women usually seen as a waste of time any rest between activities: they are less accustomed to finish a occupation, rest and start another matter. They tend to connect one thing to the next and even make several at once. Why not if it is possible? Men prefer to concentrate all their strength in solving a single problem.
Similar trouble would be with young/old people: being together, sitting or walking or waiting is a modus of to be friends. Who are you spending/wasting your time with? I am with my friends. In the middle of those wastes of time they playing computer games, talk about teachers o theirs homework, they learn to live with their peers, they will concert theirs future plans, etc.
