Names
My surnames are Sánchez and García.
García comes from "Gartzea" (Middle Age´s Euskera). It is the most common surname in Spain. The first references are from year 843. It was very common in Spanish American conquerors, so it is very diffused in America too.
Sánchez is a patronymic name (pertaining to a father). Sanchez comes from the father´s name Sancho (normally we use suffixes like -ez, -oz, -iz), then we can say that Sánchez is the Sancho´s son. Sancho comes from Latin "Sancto" (saint). The first references comes from aristocratic families of the Reconquest, when Christians conquered the Iberian peninsula from the Muslim and Moorish states of Al-Andalus.
I was surprised when I read that one of the ancestors of Sánchez was "García II Sánchez" King of Navarra...both surnames togheter from years ago!
On the Web there are pages of people named like me (or I am named like them), one architect and one sculptor are the most interesants.
