My name is Maitane, a tipical basque name, without translation. There are some similar names like Maitena, Maite, Maialen, Maddalen... but i only can say that Maite means love in basque. So people usually tell me that i´ve got a sweet name. My friends and family also call me Maita, short for Maitane.
I also have a tipical basque surname: Perez de Nanclares. This surname is from Araba, but i'm from Bizkaia, i think that my grandfather's family went to Bilbao from Araba. Now im working in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and here everybody think that i'm from Araba, and then, i have to say..."sorry, that´s not true, i was born in Bilbao."
When i meet somebody i usually use my first name, and we also use the surname to speak about people, but when we use the surname to call that person is because we have a friend relationship, we know each other.
We also use pet names like: laztana, bihotza, pitxin, politte
