selecting and grading vocabulary

However strange some people might find this, there are some "similarities" between English and Romanian in what concerns form, similarities that students sometimes identify. In fact, these words are what we call "false friends" and they sometimes make the teaching process a little bit more difficult. Students tend, instinctively, to asoociate the Romanian meaning to the English word, and due to this, misunderstandings and even breakdown of communication appear. I include below a list of false friends (only a few, because the list is longer)

English Romanian false friend

chef - chef (party)
fabric - fabrica (factory)
ban - ban (coin)
magazine - magazin (shop)
camera - camera (room)

In what concerns the words used to describe someone's character, generally the choice doesn't belong to the teacher (but to the authors of the coursebook).O f course, a teacher could make an idea about the degree of development of her students' vocabulry. It is difficult to say which words I would choose. Probably I would give the students an activity in order to see thier level. In my opinion, the words appropriate for intermmediate level are> insecure, easy-going, outgoing, hardworking and maybe assertive.
