Hipsters

Hipsters

I live in Mexico City and a common fashion here is called "hipsters" they are middle age men who wear beard, ride bycicle instead of having a car, love reading and they seem to be intelectual people with strong and clear opinions about politics, art and music, I don´t know how to explain it but to me is like wearing vintage clothes, glasses, being a vegan, love animals and all the things related to a green world. Personally I think it´s OK and prefer this fashion rather than others.

Thanks for writing Karen - I guess "hipsterism" is universal now! One bad thing they say about hipsters is that they have a tendency to move into working class neighbourhoods, start cafés and businesses etc. and start the process of gentrification. This usually means that rent goes up and working class people can't pay and have to leave the neighbourhood. Is it the same in Mexico? :)
See you,

That´s the truest fact about middle-youthers in Mexico City.
As a matter of fact we do have two neighborhoods full of hipsters. La Roma and Condesa were the first well planned neighborhoods in Mexico City. At first they were for wealthy people; Then as time pased the city started to grow and those neighbourhoods ended up being the home for middle/working class. But in the last decade the well known hipsters started to move into those neighbourhoods and started fancy businesses, restaurants and cafes, and literally ended up kicking out most of the working class people.
